Ippolito Nievo Museum

Fossalta di Portogruaro

In Fossalta di Portogruaro, not far from the main Risorgimento square in the heart of the city, you’ll find the Cultural Centre, the home of the Ippolito Nievo Museum, which holds most of the memories of the famous writer, who set his novel Confessions of an Italian here.

The museum opened in 1984 and contains hundreds of items that belonged to the writer. In the middle of one of the museum’s rooms, you’ll notice the reconstruction of the seabed of the Tyrrhenian Sea, where Nievo sank in 1861 on board the steamship ‘Ercole’.

You can also see an original copy of the Il Caffè newspaper with the writer’s autograph and all the editions of the book Confessions of an Italian, from the first printing in the previous century to those published in our times, including translations into the main foreign languages.

Completing the documentary heritage, there is a the file that contains newspaper and magazine clipping that make city centre of Fossalta one of the most up-to-date and interesting facilities in Nievian studies. The museum is sponsored by Ippolito’s great-grandson, Stanislao Nievo.
